  • Ah bangernomics. We bought our 850 estate in 1998. It has now done over 300,000 miles, I'll throw any amount of money at it because the value off the car is the sum of more than just the sale price. The reality is that doing most of the work myself, I mentally budget £500 per year in maintenance and it's usually a tiny fraction of that. It still does everything today that it used to and every system has always been maintained and still works. There are other cars available on the drive but I still enjoy the 850 as an armchair relaxed drive. It has its share of bodywork marks, mostly from the children but it's a family member so despite two random people recently knocking on the door asking to buy it, it's going nowhere!

  • On the other side.. its a Volvo and OEM parts are expensive.. if you want to drive cheap... buy a Fiat Panda, and dont annoy the other Volvo drivers with: is this normal?, is a dealer always that expensive?, is this the correct price for?, does anybody knows cheap... the answer is NO.. if you cannot afford it, dont drive it.

  • If you buy a £1 car, shouldn’t the right approach be, that you know what’s wrong and right with it before the purchase? It’s either a steal and an easy fix, or it’s a donor for parts that are to be used for an identical car you fix on the cheap with it, or you don’t buy it. What we saw here, is the purchase of someone else’s misery, resulting in the surprising discoveries that A) broken cars are no fun and B) not using your brain to think about what you’re doing may result in stupid outcomes and C) the target audience for this show seems to be brainless people in need of transport, but who are fed up with disappointing themselves due to their stupidity, but unable to change their actions without seeing one of their peers laying it out on video, so they can better themselves and take a first step towards being less of a moron.

Headlights can be cleaned up with the proper products not toothpaste... And why would you fit a brand new head unit?? Just fit an aftermarket one which would have Bluetooth etc...

  • You can repair the rear anti roll bar with new bushes, it's not the easiest job but entirely possible. On my 2002 D5 the intercooler is the same part number as a petrol engined model and available used for about£40.The anti-skid message on my car was caused by cracked front abs rings and fixed cheaply. This car could be sorted for a fraction of the quote in the video.

I work in the trade and the newer cars are pretty bad with electronic issues. Even the 00s Volvo cars were no match did the older ones. My headlights are glass. The 4 CD changer is notorious for malfunctioning which is a pity because the amp and speakers sound superb.

  • Apart from the radio (what a carve up!) we have carried much the same jobs on our two 1999 P80 models, and at a fraction of these bloated prices. Granted, a lot of the parts were used 'pulls' but the rack was about £50, in excellent working condition, headlights we replaced with Volvo 'Crystal Lights' so came in at a whopping £180 a pair, and most other parts were after market motor factor parts, but on cars of this age, they only get like this through neglect. If jobs are done as they become necessary, it need never that much to keep and older car of any make in good order. It's only when the jobs are allowed to snowball that you come across big fat repair bills.
